Driving into Spanish low-emission zones with a foreign-registered vehicle

What drivers with non-Spanish plates need to know before entering a Spanish low-emission zone: labels, pre-registration and how to check each city.

Updated 5 November 2026

If your vehicle is registered outside Spain, it will not have a DGT environmental label. That does not automatically mean you may enter — or that you are banned. It depends on each city’s ordinance.

Three things to check

  1. Whether the city has a zone in force, and whether it fines. Some zones are in an informative phase; others have been annulled by courts. We show this separately on each city page.
  2. Whether you must register your vehicle. Some cities require foreign vehicles to be registered before entering so they can be classified by Euro standard.
  3. Which Euro standard your vehicle meets. This is usually on your registration certificate (field V.9) or certificate of conformity.

Don’t assume an equivalent

Our checker estimates an equivalent classification from fuel type and Euro standard, but each city decides how foreign vehicles are treated. Where we have not verified that, we answer “unable to verify”.

Before you travel

  • Run the vehicle checker for every city on your route.
  • Keep proof of registration if the city requires it.
  • If in doubt, park outside the zone and continue by public transport.
